Botswana, or the Republic of Botswana is a country situated in southern Africa, covered in proportions of 70% by the Kalahari Desert. Its capital and largest city is represented by Gaborone and, just like the majority of African countries, it is a great destination for safaris and for observing wildlife. There are many great places to visit in Botswana thanks to its multitude of landscapes, natural reserves and great variety of animals and birds.
One of the best places to visit in Botswana that shouldn’t be missed is the Chobe National Park, home of four eco-systems. One of these protected eco-systems is the Savuti marsh where the highest concentrations of wildlife can be found. Chobe is home to over 120,000 elephants, but you can also watch zebras, buffalos, giraffes, elands and wildebeests. It also contains “the big five”, which are the lion, the leopard, the rhino, the Cape buffalo and the elephant. The reason these five species are considered the big five and not other large animals present there is because the term was coined by hunters, who made a top of the hardest animals to hunt and catch.
If you want to enjoy water and lush vegetation, one of the best places to visit in Botswana is the Okavango Delta, home of the Okavango River, which splits through the Kalahari Desert. Here you can do canoe safaris, which are also called mokoro. The Tsodilo Hills offer not only breathtaking landscapes and moving sunsets, but they are also home to over 4,000 San Bushmen rock paintings representing hunting scenes, animals, people and pictograms. Some of the drawings here have been made more than 20,000 years ago, so it is only natural that this place is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Other great places to visit in Botswana include the Nxai Pan National Park where you can admire wildlife, sand dunes, salt pans – former lakes – and Baines baobabs. The Tuli Block however, is a lush and green destination where farms used to be; luckily, they were removed and this rich place was created as a home for numerous animals and birds. If you’re going to Botswana you can’t miss the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to see the wildlife, salt pans, Kalahari sand dunes, and rare animals like the pangolin. Next on your list of destinations should also be the Mokologi Game Reserve, close to Botswana’s capital and home to numerous animals; the same goes for Moremi Game Reserve which is quite small yet endowed with a large number of animals, including the big five. A trip like this can offer you the possibility to let go of all the stress that you accumulate in the city. However before you go on a trip you should take care of several things. It is very important to consult your health insurance as well as your life insurance policies in order to make sure that they also cover you when you leave the country. If they don’t you should purchase additional health and life insurance benefits that also protect you in foreign locations. Once you take care of this delicate matters, there’s nothing else for you to do than plan your ideal holiday in Botswana.
