Оhrid Lake is the largest in Macedonia and among the three oldest lakes in the world. From biological aspectit represents the most significant stagnant aquatic ecosystem in Europeold between 3 and 10 million years. On the bottom there are remnants of volcanic lava that has been active 50000 years ago. The research has demonstrated that the basin below the lake is characterized with three larger tectonic shifts. This is a very old Eco- systemand the scientists claim that on the bottom there is anothersmaller lake. The oldest settlements around the lake date from the Neolithic periodabout 6000 years B.C. And more than 170 archaeological places have been discovered.
